Clarity Doesn’t Come First. It Comes From Action.

Most people are waiting for a lightbulb moment.

You know the one.

“Ah. That’s it. THAT’S what I’m supposed to do next.”

A sudden rush of certainty.
A clear, confident answer.
A confident plan.

Especially if you’re feeling stuck in your career, it’s easy to believe that clarity should come first. That once you finally figure it out, everything else will follow.

If that feeling is hard to name, you might recognize yourself in this:

It sounds great.

It’s also not how this actually works.

The Myth of the Lightning Bolt

We’ve been taught to chase career clarity like it’s something you’re supposed to arrive at before you take action.

That you should already know:

  • What you want

  • Where you’re going

  • What the plan is

before you begin.

So you wait.

You think.
You analyze.
You try to figure out what’s next in your career from inside your own head.

And if clarity doesn’t come?

You assume you’re not ready yet.

The Truth (That Changes Everything)

Clarity doesn’t hit you.

You build it.

It comes from motion, not magic.

From trying things.
From testing ideas.
From journaling, reflecting, talking to people.

From doing the uncomfortable, slightly awkward things that make you feel more like yourself again.

And if your brain immediately starts spinning when you try to take action, you’re not alone. I wrote more about how to interrupt that pattern here:
👉 When You’re Spiraling About What’s Next, Try This

Why You Feel Stuck in Your Career

IIf you’re feeling stuck in your career, it’s probably not because you lack options.

And it’s definitely not because you’re not capable.

It’s because you’re trying to think your way into clarity instead of move your way into it.

Overthinking creates:

  • Pressure to get it right

  • Fear of making the wrong move

  • Endless mental loops

And all of that leads to one thing:

Staying exactly where you are.

Not because you’re lazy.
Not because you lack discipline.

But because you’re waiting for clarity to come before you begin.

My Own Turning Point

If you’re wondering how to figure out what’s next in your career, I’ll tell you what changed everything for me:

I stopped waiting.

I started moving.

Not in some dramatic, life-altering way.

But in small, imperfect steps.

And those steps gave me something I couldn’t get from thinking alone:

Real feedback.

What “Action” Really Looks Like

Let’s make this practical.

Action doesn’t mean blowing up your life or making a dramatic leap.

It looks like:

  • Reaching out to someone whose work intrigues you

  • Saying yes to something that feels a little outside your comfort zone

  • Blocking time to explore an idea you keep coming back to

  • Saying no to something that drains you

Small, intentional moves.

Not perfect ones.

What Actually Creates Clarity

Every action gives you data:

  • What energizes you?

  • What drains you?

  • You want more of THIS

  • You definitely don’t want more of THAT

This is how career clarity is built.

Not from a single insight.

But from a series of lived experiences.

What “Action” Really Looks Like

If you’re trying to figure out what’s next, action doesn’t mean quitting your job or making a massive leap.

It looks like:

  • Reaching out to someone whose career path intrigues you

  • Exploring an idea you’ve been putting off

  • Saying yes to something slightly outside your comfort zone

  • Saying no to something that drains your energy

Small steps.

Low risk.

High insight.

And if those steps immediately trigger your inner critic or that “this isn’t good enough yet” voice, this will resonate:

If you’re not even sure what you need more of in your work to feel energized again, this is where getting clear on your “Core Nutrients” becomes incredibly powerful (more on that in another post).

The Shift I Make With My Clients

This is exactly what I help my clients do when they’re feeling stuck in their career or craving more alignment.

We don’t chase the perfect plan.

We:

  • Create space to notice what actually lights you up

  • Experiment in thoughtful, manageable ways

  • Reflect on what’s working and what’s not

  • Build momentum through small, intentional action

And over time?

Clarity starts to show up.

Because you’ve built it.

If You’re Trying to Figure Out What’s Next

Start here:

👉 What’s one small step I could take this week to learn something?

Not finalize.
Not solve your whole future.

Just learn.
