Stuck or Just Tired? 5 Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Career
I know what it’s like to look successful and still feel lost.
I have always been an overachiever.
During most of my career, I didn’t chase roles so much as get tapped for them. Someone would notice my skills, open a door, and I’d step through. Flattered, grateful, and willing to prove myself. And for a long time, it worked. I succeeded. I built a solid, respected career.
But eventually, I found myself in a role that wasn’t aligned with anything I actually cared about. And instead of pushing through like I always had, I felt overwhelmed. Disconnected. Stuck.
What surprised me most wasn’t the discomfort; it was the shame. I didn’t know who to talk to. I was embarrassed that I, the capable one, the high performer, felt so lost. My career had been successful, but it had also been deeply unintentional. I remember thinking, How did I get here?
Then I was laid off.
It was painful. Disorienting. And, in hindsight, clarifying. I took it as a signal—maybe from the universe, maybe from my own exhausted inner voice, that it was finally time to slow down and do the hard work I had been avoiding — figuring out what I actually wanted.
The truth was, I couldn’t even remember what had ever brought me joy at work. I wasn’t sure it was still possible.
So I worked with a coach and committed to the process. For months, I explored. I talked to people. I reflected deeply. I read. I experimented. I reflected some more.
And slowly, something became very clear: coaching filled my cup in a way nothing else ever had.
